The Memphis Grizzlies (48-34) saw their 2024-25 campaign come to a disappointing end, after a 0-4 sweep to the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The high hopes from a promising season were dashed as injuries mounted to key players—including superstar guard Ja Morant—and the team even fired head coach Taylor Jenkins with just nine games left in the regular season.

From there, speculation began swirling that Memphis might break up its core. Among the potentially available names was sharpshooting guard Desmond Bane, who carries a max contract and represents both talent and trade flexibility.

That chatter shifted to reality on Saturday, when ESPN’s Shams Charania reported a blockbuster trade: the Grizzlies are sending Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and one pick swap.

Given the massive return for Memphis, focus in the NBA landscape immediately shifted to what the Los Angeles Lakers parted with for Luka Doncic.

Bane has been a key player for Memphis since being drafted in 2020, and rose to stardom with consistent shooting—career 41% from three—and clutch performances. However, him going fore more than Doncic has fans in disbelief.

“If Bane went for 4 firsts, I wondered what Luka would’ve went for lmfao,” one fan remarked.

“more picks for desmond bane than luka doncic,” another fan added.

"Seeing Bane go for 4 first-round picks while the Lakers only had to give up 1 for Luka," said one.

"Nah Desmond Bane being worth multiple first round picks and Dallas getting a measly ONE for Luka Dončić has me furious," another added. "Thanks a lot Nico."
