WM Phoenix Open has the fifth-most water balls on PGA Tour since 2003

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ― The closing stretch at TPC Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open is strong, but danger lurks around many corners.

The short par-5 15th sets the stage for the infamous par-3 16th. The driveable par-4 17th many years decides the tournament and then the par-4 18th brings it all home.

Golfers know they have to score on those holes, but three of the four featured some form of water serving as a troublemaker.

Water lurks around the 15th green at TPC Scottsdale for the WM Phoenix Open.

The 15th has a lake down the entire left side and then a ring of water that mostly encircles the green. The 16th is the lone hole of these closing four without water. The 17th has a sliver of a lake to the left of the green and then anything long rolls down into water. The 18th also has water down the left side, but few PGA Tour pros ever find the wet stuff there.

How many golf balls have been hit into the water at WM Phoenix Open?

The number is 4,165 at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course since 2003, and that accounts for the fifth-most of any course on the PGA Tour over that time. On the 17th alone, there have been 755 water balls, third most of any hole on Tour.

On the last four holes, there have been 2,784 balls that went splash down. In other words, nearly 67 percent of water balls on the course go in somewhere along those closing holes.
