Aaron Judge ties Yogi Berra for fifth on the Yankees' career homers list

CHICAGO (AP) — New York Yankees star Aaron Judge hit his 358th career homer in the first inning of Sunday's game against the White Sox, moving into a tie with Yogi Berra for fifth in franchise history. Judge drove an 0-2 cutter from MartĂn PĂ©rez deep to center for a one-out solo drive. Judge's 43rd homer of the season had a 112.6 mph exit velocity and traveled 426 feet. He batted again in the third and doubled off the wall in center. He scampered home on Cody Bellinger's double to right. The 33-year-old Judge also connected for a solo homer in New York's 11-inning victory at Chicago on Saturday night. The two-time AL MVP and seven-time All-Star was batting .218 (17 for 78) with five homers and 11 RBIs in August coming into the day. Hall of Famers Babe Ruth (659 homers), Mickey Mantle (536), Lou Gehrig (493) and Joe DiMaggio (361) are on top of the Yankees' career homers list. Judge's drive produced the first change in the franchise's top five since Aug....

Sarri blasts ‘Serie C level’ Lazio ahead of Olimpico return against Verona

Image
Sarri blasts ‘Serie C level’ Lazio ahead of Olimpico return against Verona Maurizio Sarri did not hold back in his assessment of Lazio’s 2-0 away defeat in their 2025-26 season opener against Como, insisting his Biancocelesti side must rediscover intensity and mentality if they are to meet expectations this season. After a poor showing against Cesc Fabregas’ side, Sarri expressed some dismay with how his team performed. “At Como, we had numbers that were Serie C level in every respect,” he said, with quotes via LaLazioSiamoNoi , pointing to the his side’s 66% pass completion rate. “That, as a paradox, actually gives me confidence, because those cannot be our real numbers. We lost because of our attitude. We wanted to press but played with the mentality of those who wanted to wait. Having said that, Como may now be superior but they certainly are from a technical standpoint.” Lazio’s Italian headcoach Maurizio Sarri gestures during the UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg betw...

Nick Saban shoots down potential of becoming college football commissioner: ‘I don’t want to be in that briar patch’

Image
Ever since his surprising retirement announcement in early January 2024, college football fans far and wide have speculated about what’s next for Nick Saban . Of course, the 73-year-old former Alabama head coach has found a nice niche as an analyst on ESPN’s College GameDay as well as continuing his role as as a commercial spokesman for Alfac and Vrbo . But the one role Saban’s name has long been connected to is as the yet-to-be-created “Commissioner of College Football.” And while such a position doesn’t currently even exist, that hasn’t stopped media and fans from asking about the possibility. For his part, the seven-time national championship-winning coach has repeatedly shot down the idea. “I don’t want to be in that briar patch of being a commissioner,” Saban recently told the Associated Press , “but I do want to do everything I can to make it right.” Saban and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders spoke with the AP as part of a promotional tour ahead of the release of their...

The Virginia Tech Hokie 2025 Season: Initial Risk Analysis

Image
We start the review of the season as a matter of risk analysis and probabilities for wins. This season we’ll take the schedule as it comes instead of sorting by risk levels. The reason for the change is pretty simple; confusion. Several people commented to me that it’d be better to just do the chart in the same order of the schedule since sorting by risk level was harder to track. There will be a (Win/Loss), and an (Updated Odds) column will be added to the middle third chart to account for the inevitable corrections and updates as the season unfolds. Defining Risk Let’s go over the Risk entry parameters so that we can better understand what’s in the chart. Initial Risk – This is the risk posed by the opponent. It is based on a combination of last season’s record, current potential performance, and competition level. For the first chart, it is always a mix of gut feeling, intuition, and trusted opinion sampling. Risk to Opponent – This is the same sort of analysis specifically ...

Randy Moss visits Deion Sanders before Colorado's season opener

Image
Randy Moss visits Deion Sanders before Colorado's season opener originally appeared on The Sporting News Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes welcomed another Hall-of-Famer into the Champions Center on Wednesday. Randy Moss took time to address the players just days before the home opener with Georgia Tech and asked the question: "Am I my brother's keeper?" He framed it around a story about his legendary playing career and carrying on the legacy of his late brother. He also applauded Sanders for his ongoing efforts to boost CU Football to another level. "I love what you're doing around here, coach. Because this is what I stand for," Moss said. "There was a reason why I told coach I wanted to come and see this team. There is a reason. NC State coach Dave Doeren pays tribute to iconic Lee Corso

Image
NC State coach Dave Doeren and ESPN media personality Lee Corso share one thing in common. Doeren was the coach at Northern Illinois from 2011-12 and went 23-4 overall and 15-1 in the MAC, leading to getting hired at NC State. Corso coached one year in DeKalb, Ill., going 4-6-1 in 1984 with the Huskies. The team struggled mightily to score points and he left to coach the Orlando Renegades in the USFL in 1985. The Renegades, were formerly the Washington Federals for two years, had a messy ownership transition and it led to Corso. He went 5-13 with a nondescript roster with quarterback Reggie Collier and that was his last year coaching football. ESPN hired Corso in 1987 to become an analyst for its Saturday College GameDay and the rest is television history. “The comedic element of what he does that I think some of us really appreciate,” Doeren said. “Some people are serious, serious, serious, serious and having that comedic element as a commentator. I just appreciated his energy...

Colin Cowherd: Lincoln Riley is unfireable at USC

Image
Since taking over at USC , Lincoln Riley has faced growing criticism. Once hailed as the program’s savior, he’s now the subject of speculation about whether his time in Los Angeles could be cut short. Riley has overseen the Trojans’ high-profile transition to the Big Ten, and as the 2025 season approaches, fans are eager to see the program contend for a conference title. Whether that happens remains to be seen—but according to FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd , Riley’s job is secure no matter the outcome. He believes the coach is “unfireable.” “Well, I think I’ve told you this before. The NIL, you know, these coaches that all hate it — actually makes many of the coaches unfireable,” Cowherd told FOX’s Joel Klatt on the latest episode of the latter’s show . “Because if I’m spending $18 million on players, you can’t go to a booster and go, ‘Hey, by the way, can you buy out Lincoln Riley for $72 million and pay the next coach $80 million?’ And they’re like, ‘I’m already giving you $7 millio...

Rodney Childers volunteers for Kaulig Racing job after Chris Rice staff comments

Image
Could Rodney Childers find himself back in NASCAR soon? Perhaps Kaulig Racing’s new Ram Truck Series team can do it. Childers has been spending his time enjoying life at home. He’s also been helping young drivers like Keelan Harvick and Landen Lewis in the CARS Tour. Kaulig Racing is launching the Kaulig Trucks team in 2026. They will field five trucks for Ram. The expectation is to buy trucks from Spire Motorsports and likely downsize the Xfinity Series program. When you think about how well the Truck Series trucks line up with the Cup Series cars now, it makes sense. Time and again, we hear about how the Xfinity Series cars are nothing like the Cup cars, and learning from them only does so much. With the news that Kaulig Racing is the new home of Ram Trucks in NASCAR, Rodney Childers had his interests piqued. “I know some people needing a good job,” Childers said in reply to a tweet from Matt Weaver of Motorsport. So, Childers to Kaulig? It doesn’t stop there, either. Corey L...

Loop kicks 61-yard field goal as Ravens finish preseason undefeated with 30-3 win over Commanders

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Keyon Martin returned an interception for a touchdown, Tyler Loop kicked a 61-yard field goal and the Baltimore Ravens completed an unbeaten preseason with a 30-3 rout of the Washington Commanders on Saturday. It was Washington that snapped Baltimore's record streak of 24 preseason wins two years ago. That was the start of four losses in five exhibition games for the Ravens, but then they went 3-0 this year. None of this means all that much. Star quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Jayden Daniels weren't playing, and the Commanders didn't play backup Marcus Mariota either. Sam Hartman threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in the second quarter for Washington. Receiver Terry McLaurin, currently in a contract dispute with the Commanders, was at the game but did not play. Martin, who contributed a safety in the team's previous preseason game against Dallas, picked off a pass and ran it back 26 yards to give Baltimore a 24-3 lead. Washington, which...

Kentucky MBB takes on Natural Bridge to begin preseason team retreat

Image
The Wildcats are back from summer break, but the ball isn’t bouncing at the Joe Craft Center again quite yet. First, they’re traveling around the state learning to become Kentucky’s Team , just as Mark Pope’s first group did this time last year. In August 2024, the Cats went to Hazard to build houses for flood victims, participated in a community cookout and got out on the lake with jet skis and tubing, among other activities. What’s in store in August 2025? The preseason team retreat started at Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge on Friday, going hiking and checking out the views on the skylift. “We had some special guests ride the lift today… a few of the University of Kentucky Basketball players!” The Natural Bridge Skylift & Giftshop shared on Facebook. “It’s not every day you get to share the sky with the Cats.” That photo features Trent Noah, Collin Chandler, Brandon Garrison, Jaland Lowe, Mo Dioubate, Reece Potter, Jasper Johnson, Malachi Moreno and, yes, Andrija Jelavi...

Derrick Moore credits past Michigan leaders for his growth, becoming team captain: ‘I owe them to do it for the younger guys’

Image
Michigan Wolverines football senior EDGE Derrick Moore received significant playing time as a freshman in 2022, was a strong rotational player as a sophomore in 2023 and became a starter in 2024. Now, he’s a captain, one of six on Michigan’s 146th football team. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Baltimore native chuckled when he was asked if the younger version of himself envisioned becoming a captain one day. “That’s something I had to grow into,” Moore said. “Especially being around the leaders that we had in previous years, and just seeing them and how dialed into the Michigan program they were, I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know if I’m ever gonna fill those shoes,’ for the guys — just the way they talk, the way they carry themselves and the way they go out on the field and perform.” But Moore did grow into it, due part to the examples he had before him, including defensive back Mike Sainristil , defensive tackle Mazi Smith , linebacker Michael Barrett , defensive tackle Kris Jenkins an...

Broncos sign DL Michael Dwumfour

New Hampshire features some of the area’s top football programs annually and this fall looks to be no different. The Granite State produces some of the top talent out of the region, with numerous private schools leading the way in the state when it comes to winning state championships. Here’s how the  Massey Ratings  ranked New Hampshire’s Top 25 high school football teams for 2025. The  Massey Ratings , officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory. 1. Kirby Smart shares opinion on College Football Playoff expansion, conference championships

Image
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti reportedly floated the idea of exploding the current 12-team College Football Playoff in favor of a potential 24- or 28-team format that would effectively bring an end to conference championship games. The proposal — which was only recently presented to Big Ten members last week and remains in “ the very early stages,” according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel — would grant up to seven automatic bids to the Big Ten and SEC while the ACC and Big 12 receive five AQ bids apiece. ESPN’s report of Petitti’s proposal prompted immediate repudiation from college football analysts far and wide, including from ESPN and SEC Network personality Paul Finebaum . Most of the criticisms center around the implication there are even 20-plus college football teams each season worthy of playing for a national championship. But for coaches like Georgia ‘s Kirby Smart , who’s one of only two active head coaches with multiple national titles on their resume (the other being Cle...

Report: Jalen McMillan will begin season on IR and could miss more than four games

Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday morning that wide receiver Jalen McMillan will not be ready for Week 1 . He did not, however, provide a timetable for McMillan's return. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Bucs will place McMillan on injured reserve to start the season. That will keep McMillan out at least four games, but Stroud added that McMillan could be out past the team's off week in Week 9. McMillan "severely" sprained his neck when he was flipped upside down and landed on his neck and head in last week's preseason game. The Bucs feel fortunate it wasn't worse as McMillan will return this season. Tampa Bay is deep at the position with Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka as the starters and Chris Godwin eventually returning from a dislocated ankle that ended his 2024 season. McMillan, a third-round pick last year, caught 37 passes for 461 yards and eight touchdowns. from Yahoo! Sports - News, Scores, Standings, Rumors, Fantasy Games ...

Tommy Fleetwood eyes first Tour victory, FedExCup

ATLANTA – Tommy Fleetwood’s late collapse earlier this month at the FedEx St. Jude Championship resonated across the golf world as he attempted to win his first PGA Tour event in his 162 nd start. The Englishman failed to birdie the par-5 16 th hole after a poor chip and bogeyed the 17 th to finish tied for third at TPC Southwind, a shot outside a playoff that was won by Justin Rose. Fleetwood followed his near miss in Memphis with a tie for fourth place last week at the BMW Championship – which he said felt like a better result than his showing at the first playoff stop. Given his form, Fleetwood is among the week’s favorites at East Lake which sets up an interesting scenario where he could claim his long-awaited first Tour title and the FedExCup. “I think different tournaments have different meanings to you. There's so many unbelievable tournaments. I'm not going to be picky about which one I choose to have as the first one,” Fleetwood said. “This one would be a good o...

Cutter Boley is hanging around in Kentucky’s starting quarterback battle

Image
Kentucky went to the transfer portal in the offseason to address the starting quarterback position again. Incarcate Word transfer Zach Calzada was added to the program to become UK’s fourth transfer starter in the last five seasons. But a young returnee is staying alive in this position battle. Cutter Boley started one game for Kentucky last season and is hanging around this QB1 battle. Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops told fans in attendance at the Greater Louisville UK Alumni 2025 Wildcat Kickoff Luncheon at Churchill Downs on Monday that the redshirt freshman remains alive in this battle less than two weeks before kickoff. “Zach Calzada is a transfer, a sixth-year player. I really like his experience. He’s been around a long time. He’s played in this league, he’s won big games. He was the starting quarterback at Texas A&M years ago under Jimbo (Fisher). Won a bunch of critical games there,” Stoops said in Louisville when asked about Kentucky’s quarterback room. “Had an inj...

Countdown to Kickoff: No. 11

Image
George Godsey The countdown to kickoff is officially on as Georgia Tech ‘s season-opening matchup at Colorado on Aug. 29 is less than 100 days away. Until then JOL will be counting it down with one Jackets’ player daily that wore the corresponding number of days remaining until toe meets leather in Boulder. With it now 11 days until kickoff in Boulder, today’s focus is on No. 11 George Godsey, a beloved Georgia Tech quarterback who waited his turn behind fellow Jackets’ legend Joe Hamilton and then made the most of his two years starting on The Flats in 2000 and 2001, including being named an All-American. Godsey played his prep ball at Jesuit High (Fla.) in Tampa where he caught the attention of several college programs, including Georgia Tech. He eventually chose to to sign with the Jackets and former head coach George O’Leary in the 1998 recruiting class. Godsey’s career on The Flats started with some patience while also helping his team and teammates any way he could on the s...

Watch Notre Dame coaches Marcus Freeman, Mike Denbrock and Chris Ash speak on Sunday

Notre Dame football ended its fall camp on Sunday , and now the next portion of the fall begins, game preparation. With the “ending” of camp, head coach Marcus Freeman along with defensive coordinator Chris Ash and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock each spoke with the media . They touched on multiple topics including the quarterback battle (which we are all wondering how it plays out ), the scrimmage that happened today, position battles that are on-going, some seniors stepping up and more. Freeman once again showed why he is so likable, answering every question in an honest manner, and going into details on each of them as well. It’s not like Ash or Denbrock didn’t, but having the leader of the program being so candid, it moves down the line for his staff. How Penn State handled transfer portal in 2025

James Franklin made one thing crystal clear at Big Ten Media Day; Penn State isn’t building through the transfer portal. They’ll use it, sure. But they’re not living in it like some other programs. For Franklin, it’s always been about player development and creating depth through high school recruiting. The portal? That’s just a tool, not the foundation. Franklin said Penn State added a few transfers this offseason, but was super intentional with who they brought in. He emphasized how hard it is to get it right every time in the portal. There’s way more that goes into it than just grabbing talent. Fit, character, positional need, and development timeline all matter. And sometimes the player doesn’t want to compete — they want a guaranteed role. That’s not how things work in Happy Valley. Franklin also called out the fact that fans don’t always understand the behind-the-scenes. Just because a high-profile name enters the portal doesn’t mean Penn State should or will chase them. Somet...

Beasts of No Nations: The Underdog Stories Behind Kentucky Football

Image
There are few things Kentucky fans love more than assigning nicknames to teams. While that typically is reserved for the basketball program, Shiyazh Pete provided the perfect one to describe this year’s Kentucky football team. “We got a lot of news guys, inexperienced ones, and we’ve also got a bunch of experienced guys coming in from different places,” he told KSR at Kentucky Football Media Day “ We’re beasts of no nation s.” That description was specifically directed to the rebuilt Kentucky offensive line, but it’s not exclusive to the Big Blue Wall. This Kentucky football team is filled with players who have eye-opening underdog stories. Allow me to share the short version of a few incredible stories before they write the final chapter in Lexington. Zach Calzada Most college football fans know Zach Calzada ‘s name because of one game, Texas A&M’s upset of top-ranked Alabama in 2021. He stepped in for the injured Haynes King in game No. 2 and guided the Aggies to an 8-4 ca...
