Football coach Dabo Swinney said through a spokesperson Sunday that Schieffelin will be suspended to start the season.

‘We are aware of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest on suspicion of DUI,” Swinney said in the prepared statement. “Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence. We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.”

Schieffelin was a star for the Tigers’ basketball team, exhausting his eligibility in that sport before deciding to give football a try.

He was not expected to play a significant role this season, at least not early, because he hasn’t played football since his 10th-grade year of high school. He’s also behind a long list of players at the position including Olsen Patt-Henry, Josh Sapp and Chistian Bentancur.

Had he not gone the football route, Schieffelin likely would’ve gone overseas to play basketball professionally.
