Steelers Ex Hoge Blasts Shedeur As 'Ain't Even Close' QB
The Pittsburgh Steelers had their chance to end the speculation around their future at the quarterback position this past weekend at the NFL Draft. Some thought that would mean their selecting Shedeur Sanders with the No. 21 overall pick in the draft.
Pittsburgh passed on him and did not really find a long term answer at the position either. Instead, they went about filling almost every other need on the roster, passing on Sanders at every stop.
Now perhaps they will look like fools in the coming years and their vaunted rival Cleveland Browns will absorb the praise for finding a diamond in the rough.
But the Sanders-Steelers connection before the draft was already shaky. According to one former Steeler, it would seem the team made the right call in his eyes.
Just days before the draft, Merril Hoge appeared on WDVE radio in Pittsburgh, explaining his case as to why Sanders is not a viable quarterback at the professional level.
"I think the best way to sum him up is, he's a really good college quarterback: His accuracy is good, his processing is good," Hoge said. "And when I say good, I use a scale from 1 to 10, so good is around a five.... if you're a five, you're not a first-rounder. You're not a franchise guy."
Hoge went on to detail how Colorado's system protected Sanders and the player's pure talent does not measure up to the recently selected first round quarterback stars. If this former Steelers' perspective was of the same mindset in the war room, it's no surprise as to why the team made this decision.
"That's the skill set you're looking for," Hoge said. "He ain't even close, he ain't even in the ballpark... There's some toughness to him I like, but how he moves, he ain't going to put fear in anybody."
Hard to argue there. It may be a while before he sees a football field in the regular season. Sanders will have to work his way up a depth chart where he is technically fifth in the pecking order.
While speculation pours in regarding why his slide occurred, the fact remains that something about his profile made 32 teams, including the Browns, turn their nose multiple times on a guy with a first-round grade according to some experts.
Whatever the case, Sanders' draft slide gratified the beliefs of his doubters. The situation he will have to work his way through makes the road back to glory even more difficult.
If Sanders amounts to anything in Cleveland, it will be a multi-year process with some major transition. Hopefully in that same time, the Steelers will find their own quarterback answers and not be looking back at what could have been.
