Chargers got excellent value on DB Genesis Smith

(Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images) | Getty Images The Los Angeles Chargers knew they needed to get some help for the secondary during the NFL Draft and they got that in defensive back Genesis Smith, the No. 131 overall pick out of Arizona. Smith is someone that could have gone much sooner in the draft, but the Chargers stopped his slide on Day 3 and they could benefit from him as soon as this season on both defense and special teams. “Safety was one of the top needs for the Chargers this offseason, and Smith was one of my favorite late-Day 2 targets who ultimately fell to Day 3,” ESPN contributor Matt Miller wrote. “With great size at 6-2 and 200 pounds, Smith didn’t post stellar 40 times in predraft workouts, but he’s an instinctive playmaker who can patrol deep and use his p...

Should OKC Thunder root for Lakers or Rockets to advance to Round 2?

Image
After another Round 1 sweep, the Oklahoma City Thunder get to enjoy a mini-vacation. They took care of business against the Phoenix Suns with a mundane Game 4 win on Monday. Turns out, the lopsided matchup played out exactly like everybody thought it would. Now, the Thunder await their Round 2 opponent. It'll either be the Los Angeles Lakers or the Houston Rockets . Considering the Lakers hold a tight 3-1 series lead, feels like it's going to be them to advance to face the reigning NBA champions. Both teams have been without important pieces. The Lakers remain without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. The Rockets have only had Kevin Durant suit up once in the NBA playoffs. That has caused this weird Round 1 matchup to feature the zombie versions of both contenders. Not something you typically see. Let's spell out every argument for the Lakers and Rockets as to why the Thunder should and shouldn't favor a matchup against them in the second round of the 2026 NBA playo...

Devin Booker tips cap to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 'He’s the MVP of the league'

Image
Starting their voyage for a hopeful back-to-back title, the Oklahoma City Thunder have kept pace with last year's destination to a Larry O'Brien trophy. For the third straight year, they completed a Round 1 sweep. This time, over the Phoenix Suns . The Thunder completed a 131-122 Game 4 win over the Suns. With Jalen Williams sidelined halfway through the Round 1 series, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander amped up his playoff production. He had an efficient 31 points and eight assists. Meanwhile, the Suns' counterpart couldn't match his production — or really, get anywhere near the zone of it. Devin Booker was a no-show for the Round 1 series. He averaged a forgettable 21.3 points on 46% and 4.8 assists. He had 24 points and six assists in Game 4. Afterward, game recognized game. Booker tipped his cap to the Thunder. And specifically, Gilgeous-Alexander. The 29-year-old has been in the NBA long enough to know when you're seeing an all-time legend. Considering Gilgeous-Ale...

Return of Yankees injured stars raises more questions than answers

Image
The New York Yankees have been one of the best teams in MLB through the first month of the season, and they are about to get healthier. Clarity, however, isn’t coming with it. With Anthony Volpe and Carlos Rodon both expected back within the next 10–14 days, the Yankees are facing a different kind of problem. Former Cy Young award winner Gerrit Cole is also expected back in less than a month, which complicates matters even more. Too many moving pieces, and not enough obvious answers. MORE: 3 MLB teams who could fire their managers and hire Alex Cora What Happens in the Infield? New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe follows through on a solo home run against the Milwaukee Brewers. | Brad Penner-Imagn Images Volpe’s return should be simple… right? Not exactly. While he’s been the team’s everyday shortstop the past two seasons, the Yankees have gotten contributions in his absence, particularly from JosĂ© Caballero, who has made a case to stay in the lineup. That creates a dilem...

PARIS, FRANCE - APRIL 19: PSG Head Coach Luis Enrique Martinez talks during the Ligue 1 McDonald's match between Paris Saint-Germain FC and Olympique Lyonnais at Parc des Princes on April 19, 2026 in Paris, France. (Photo by Federico Pestellini/Eurasia Sport Images/Getty Images) | Getty Images Both Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain recorded wins in their respective league ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semifinals first leg in Paris. PSG took care of business in Ligue 1, beating Angers 3-0 away from home and Bayern came from 3-0 down at halftime in Mainz to win 4-3 in their first match after having been crowned Bundesliga champions for the 35th time. Granted, Vincent Kompany had to bring on some of his heavy hitters in the second half to get the job done a la Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Jamal Musiala. For PSG’s 3-0 win at Angers that tilted the Ligue 1 title race more in their favor after Lens’ 3-3 draw at Brest, Enrique also made wholesale changes from what would be...

7-foot-2 Moustapha Thiam exits from Cincinnati to Michigan Wolverines

Image
Moustapha Thiam, a 7-foot-2, 250-pound center rented by the University of Cincinnati for a season, will follow the trend of many NCAA basketball players by playing for a third team in three seasons. This time, the 20-year-old pivot will suit up for the defending NCAA National Champion Michigan Wolverines . ESPN Inside Shams Charania first reported the transaction. Cincinnati's 7-foot-2 center Moustapha Thiam has committed to play for the reigning NCAA champion Michigan Wolverines, he tells ESPN. Thiam averaged 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks last season and serves as a major transfer portal pickup for coach Dusty May. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) April 24, 2026 Thiam came to the UC Bearcats last spring, shortly after UC lost to UCF in the College Basketball Crown. Both Thiam and then-UCF assistant Mamadou N'Diaye (also a 7-footer from Senegal) came from UCF after Thiam's freshman season to join Wes Miller's Bearcats. After averaging 10.4 and 6.4 p...

Jalen Reed, LSU big man, commits to Michigan basketball out of transfer portal

Image
As the Wolverines await NBA Draft decisions from center Aday Mara and forward Morez Johnson Jr., they continued to restock their frontcourt. Michigan landed another commitment from an SEC big man out of the transfer portal, this time receiving a pledge from Jalen Reed, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward from LSU, on Thursday. Reed, a former top-100 recruit, shared news of his commitment on his Instagram page. Reed has spent the past four years at LSU, but he’s been limited to 14 games the past two seasons after suffering back-to-back season-ending injuries. He started eight games in 2024-25 and averaged 11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds in 23.6 minutes before he went down with an ACL injury. Last season, he played in six games and averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds in 18 minutes before an Achilles injury cut his campaign short. For his career, Reed has played in 79 games and made 39 starts with the Tigers. Reed joins J.P. Estrella , a 6-11 forward from Tennessee, as Michigan’s second t...

Tyler Adams says US knows ahead of World Cup it's been awhile `since we’ve knocked off a big boy'

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Tyler Adams had just finished helping Bournemouth extend its Premier League unbeaten streak to 13 on a typically English afternoon where rain fell at the same time the sun was shining at St. James' Park. The 27-year-old midfielder had entered midway through the second half of 2-1 win at Newcastle, his second appearance following an injury, as his fourth season in the Premier League winds down. Up next for Adams is his second World Cup, where the co-host Americans will be in the brightest of spotlights amid questions about their readiness. Group D for the U.S. includes Paraguay, Australia and Turkey. The stark truth is the Americans have lost eight straight games against European opponents, including losses to Belgium and Portugal in March friendlies that Adams missed. “Maybe a little bit of a wake-up call but we’ll get there in the end,” he said. Adams was the U.S. captain at the 2022 World Cup and he is well aware of the underdog status, The U.S. is ...

Jets predicted to land Joe Burrow if Bengals struggles continue

Jets predicted to land Joe Burrow if Bengals struggles continue originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here . The future of Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow is uncertain with the team.  For the past few months, there has been major speculation on whether or not this could be Burrow's final season with the team. It's been an array of problems for Burrow and the Bengals, and no one would be surprised if this season is his final in Cincinnati.  A ton of things would need to go wrong for that to happen, and if so, a ton of teams would be in line to make a move for Burrow. If that happens, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton predicts the New York Jets would trade for the former No. 1 overall pick.  Moton predicts the Jets are one of five teams that could trade for Burrow if the Bengals' struggles trickle into 2026.  "Gang Green has three first-round picks in the 2027 draft: its own selection, th...

What Kevin Stefanski said about new Falcons OT Jawaan Taylor

Kaleb McGary's retirement may have come as a surprise to those outside the building, but the Atlanta Falcons knew it was a possibility and had an answer ready , signing former Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor the same day. Taylor's contract is only a one-year deal , so we can't rule out the Falcons targeting a potential future franchise right tackle in the draft later this week. At least for now Taylor is the logical candidate to start opposite long-time left tackle Jake Matthews come Week 1. Asked about Atlanta's newest offensive lineman, head coach Kevin Stefanski had this to say at today's pre-draft press conference with general manager Ian Cunningham. "Really good cultural fit," said Stefanski. "Great person. You know, enjoyed my time when he came in and just getting to know him a little bit. But he will fit in great with that room, and like Ian mentioned, he's played on some good football team...

Two Tar Heels to New York Jets in USA TODAY Sports' NFL Mock Draft

Several hundred young men will have their childhood dreams realized on Thursday, April 23, which kicks off the NFL Draft. The UNC football team doesn't have any top-ranked prospects for this year's Draft, but there's still a couple guys projected to play at the next level. Cornerbacks Marcus Allen and Thaddeus Dixon , two of North Carolina's top 2025 defenders, are both in USA TODAY Sports' 2026 NFL Mock Draft. Dixon is mocked 179th overall (sixth round) to the New York Jets , while Allen goes 242nd overall (seventh round), also to the New York Jets. In a college football world dominated by the transfer portal, Allen played all four seasons as a Tar Heel, rising to become a key member of the secondary. Allen totaled 136 tackles (100 solo), 22 pass deflections (T-career-high 8 in 2025), and three interceptions during his time in Chapel Hill. Dixon entered UNC as one of the top, incoming 2025 transfers , coming over from the Washington Huskies with defensive co...

Colorado football offers top 2027 offensive tackle from Georgia

Colorado football finished spring camp, and now the recruiting season really gets going, and Deion Sanders's staff is busy handing out offers and landing commitments . On Tuesday, the Buffaloes extended an offer to 2027 four-star offensive tackle Kennedee Jackson. Jackson is a 6-foot-6, 297-pound prospect from Lithonia, Georgia. He holds 23 offers, most from top-level programs, including LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, USC and Texas Tech. 247Sports Composite ranks Jackson as the No. 133 overall prospect, the No. 16 offensive tackle and the No. 13 player from Georgia. In high school, Jackson played both offensive and defensive tackle as a full-time two-way player. The fact that Colorado, a big proponent of two-way talents, offered Jackson suggests that they would, at the very least, give Jackson a chance to play both sides of the ball in college. Arsenal’s long-term target is interested in a move to Man Utd

Image
Arsenal’s long-term target is interested in a move to Man Utd Nico Williams remains a long-term target for Arsenal , with the Gunners continuing to monitor his situation closely. However, there is now a strong possibility that the Spanish winger could join one of their direct rivals instead during the summer transfer window. Williams has established himself as one of the most exciting wide players in world football in recent seasons. His outstanding performances at Euro 2024 further enhanced his reputation and prompted serious interest from top European clubs, including Arsenal. Long-term Deal but Uncertain Future The Spaniard was also heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, with both clubs competing for his signature. Despite that interest, he opted to remain at Athletic Club and committed his future by signing a long-term contract that runs until the summer of 2035. While that agreement provides his current club with security, it does not entirely rule out a transfer. There r...

4 situations where the Cowboys may choose to trade up

Image
The 2026 NFL Draft represents a momentous opportunity for the Dallas Cowboys as they hold two top-20 picks. The last remaining asset from the Micah Parsons trade will soon be gone, leaving nothing more to gain from shipping off their All-Pro edge rusher. This puts added pressure to do the right thing in this year’s draft, and how the team uses its first-round draft capital could have implications for many years to come. With so much draft capital comes options. They can stand pat and make their picks, they can trade back and collect additional picks, or they can roll the dice and trade up to secure a player they highly covet. The choices are plentiful. While most would profess the Cowboys have several needs and should consider exchanging a little quality for quantity, there are some scenarios where it would behoove the team to drive up to land that generational defensive star. Today, we’ll examine four possible scenarios that could get that phone ringing on Thursday as the Cowboys m...

(Photo by Michael Owens/Getty Images) | Getty Images Second-year Los Angeles Rams running back Blake Corum had a breakthrough season in 2025 following a lackluster rookie campaign. After being given more opportunities on offense in Year 2, can Corum capitalize on it ahead of this season? His lack of opportunities in his first year in the league is well-documented. He played in all 17 games, yet only rushed 58 times for 207 yards and zero touchdowns. Some fans were clamoring for him to get more playing time when Kyren Williams was struggling with fumbling issues. However, it just wasn’t meant to be for the Michigan product that year. Corum again played all 17 games last season, but amassed nearly 750 yards on the ground on 145 touches and six rushing scores. I...
