Titans' end-of-half mismanagement marks worst Brian Callahan blunder yet

The Tennessee Titans had the ball at midfield at the two-minute warning with timeouts and time to score and get within a touchdown of the Indianapolis Colts before halftime.

And then Brian Callahan and his increasingly-shaky end-of-half strategy stepped into the spotlight.

There was a lot that went into it, but in summary: The Titans, down 17-6 tried to settle for a field goal without getting into reasonable field goal range, allowing the Colts to get into field goal range themselves before halftime.

Here's how Callahan and the Titans messed up at the end of the half, step-by-step:

  • Tony Pollard carries for six yards, and the play clock rolls down almost all way the down.
  • Pollard carries again for a couple yards, and the play clock rolls down again.
  • Pollard is short on 3rd and 2, and the Titans opt for a long field goal as the Colts call timeout with 47 seconds left.
  • The Titans call timeout after the Colts' timeout.
  • The Titans do not get the kicking ball into the game in time, and they take a delay-of-game penalty because they couldn't take back-to-back timeouts.
  • Brian Callahan elects to keep Joey Slye out on the field for a 62-yard field goal, which is blocked by Grover Stewart.
  • The Colts get the ball in Tennessee territory with 41 seconds left in the half and timeouts to work with, and they work into easy field goal range.
  • Spencer Shrader makes a 36-yard field goal as time expires in the first half.
  • Callahan tells CBS that, similar to the end-of-the-half scenario last week, he wanted to take the points. Not sure how that translates to settling for a long field goal attempt after Slye had already missed from 64 in the game.
  • Titans fans boo Callahan off the field.
  • Halftime score: Colts 20, Titans 6

Similar to last week's conservative end-of-half play calling against the LA Rams, Callahan said to CBS that he just wanted to take the points.

But it's wishful thinking, at best, to consider a 50-plus yard field goal as a means to pocketing points.

That's before considering the strategy and manner in getting to that long field goal.
