Who shined brightest on the diamond last week? Here are baseball's top player nominees
Bishop Hendricken remains the lone unbeaten team atop Division I, North Providence and West Warwick are setting the pace in Division II, and Woonsocket is threatening to run away with Division III.
That’s the current state baseball scene as we get set to make the turn into May. The Hawks, Cougars, Wizards and Villa Novans are the favorites in their respective title races as April comes to a close.
Hendricken won a showdown with rival La Salle and finished a suspended 11-inning classic with Cumberland to stay perfect. North Providence and West Warwick are rolling with one defeat apiece, holding a two-game lead on the rest of the field in the loss column. Woonsocket has a headline meeting with the Pawtucket co-op coming, another chance to cement its place atop the standings.
Each of those programs is powered by standout players, and that’s our business here. Some of these names are familiar, and a few more have emerged over the course of the opening month. That discovery is part of what makes sports interesting.
Our second Player of the Week nominees are here, and they come with a reminder — we need your help. These athletes were selected thanks to scores reported to The Journal. We’d ask coaches, home or away, to stay in contact with us each time you take the field.
You can reach us by phone at (401) 277-7340 each weeknight from 6 to 10 p.m. or by email at pjsports@providencejournal.com. There isn’t anything at stake in this voting other than bragging rights and a little extra recognition. These selections have no influence of future awards such as Player of the Year or All-State recognition.
Also, a quick note on Player of the Week voting — it must be done by using the ballot that accompanies this story. By phone, through an email, or by saying hello to one of us at a game — none of those will be officially added to the tally. Just a simple click at the end of this will do it.
And with that, on to the nominees for the week of April 21-27.
Chase Collins, Westerly
Collins was brilliant on the mound in a 2-0 win over Moses Brown, a Division I contest that went eight innings. He fired a no-hitter with seven strikeouts against no walks, allowing the Bulldogs some extra time to eventually find their offense.
Cullen Crain, Bishop Hendricken
Crain racked up six RBI in a 13-7 rally past rival La Salle, a Division I game the Hawks trailed by a 7-4 count into the top of the sixth inning. Crain helped fuel a nine-run outburst with a three-run double down the line in right, the end to his big afternoon downtown.
Finley Hohl, Narragansett
Hohl tossed a one-hit shutout to help the Mariners past Burrillville, 1-0, in Division II. Narragansett plated the game’s lone run and Hohl made it stand up against the contending Broncos.
Patrick Munger, Woonsocket
Munger fired a two-hitter as the Villa Novans edged fellow Division III contender Scituate, 1-0. The right-hander struck out eight to help Woonsocket make it another unbeaten week.
Joe Riviera, West Warwick
Riviera cracked a three-run triple to help spark a rally in the seventh inning, as the Wizards came from behind to top East Greenwich, 5-4, in Division II. West Warwick did all of its scoring in the final frame. Riviera added two hits later in the week in an 8-1 win over Toll Gate.
