Trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers last offseason left the Dallas Cowboys with a true difference-making defender in 2025-26.

As a result, Dallas struggled to generate turnovers, defend the run effectively, and apply heavy pressure on opposing quarterbacks. In other words, the Cowboys' unreliable play on defense overshadowed the offense’s electric performance from start to finish (they ranked second in total offense and fifth in scoring).

Last Word on Sports’ Anthony Palacios believes that acquiring the Pittsburgh Steelers’ superstar trade candidate could be the move that helps Dallas elevate their defensive production in 2026-27.

“T.J. Watt joining the Dallas Cowboys would be the dream scenario,” Palacios wrote Thursday. “The team tried to trade for Maxx Crosby this offseason, but failed to meet the Las Vegas Raiders’ asking price.”

“However, the offseason has been highly productive in terms of improving the defense. The team traded for Rashan Gary while drafting Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham.”

“They also traded for Dee Winters to strengthen the depth, but they still lack a true superstar. Gary is coming off an unproductive 2025 campaign, so there isn’t a guarantee he could get established. If everything falls apart during the 2026 season, the team could look to aggressively pursue Watt before the trade deadline.”

Based on a recent report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Watts should be considered a trade candidate due to the likelihood of Pittsburgh signing Nick Herbig to a long-term extension and the franchise already being heavily invested in Alex Highsmith.

The dynamic 31-year-old linebacker is coming off a season in which he recorded 55 tackles, seven tackles, and three forced fumbles, which is below his usual standards. Still, Watt’s 517 tackles, 115 sacks, and 14 forced fumbles for his career prove his career has been filled with dependable tackling, gifted pass-rushing tools, and big-time playmaking instincts.

Given the likelihood of the Steelers considering a Watt-centered trade during the 2027 offseason, though, there’s a good chance the franchise won’t partner with the Cowboys or any other interested organizations as soon as many would like.
