Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres updates. Corbin Carroll sits for finale

SAN DIEGO — Corbin Carroll is out of the Diamondbacks’ lineup again for their season finale against the San Diego Padres on Sept. 28 as manager Torey Lovullo said he wants to be sure his star right fielder heads into the offseason on a healthy note.

“He’s banged up,” Lovullo said. “He played a month recovering with a broken hand. I just told him, ‘I want to take you off the field.’”

Carroll also was out of the lineup on Sept. 27, the day after the club was eliminated from the wild-card race. Carroll had started 65 consecutive games.

“I just felt like I got to take care of him,” Lovullo said. “I don’t want him to leave this season banged up. I think he’s on the other side. I want to be just situationally aware of what he can and can’t do for us.”

Second baseman Ketel Marte, who also did not play the night before, is leading off and serving as the designated hitter.

Lovullo dropped shortstop Geraldo Perdomo to the No. 3 spot in the lineup in hopes of creating some RBI opportunities for him. Perdomo has driven in 99 runs this season, and Lovullo would like to see him reach 100.

“(I said), ‘If you get that 100th RBI and it’s the right time in the game, we’re going to take you off the field and congratulate you on a job well done,’” Lovullo said. “Whether he gets it or not, it’s been a phenomenal year for him.”
