There is, I suspect, very little doubt about the top and bottom of the division. The Dodgers are prohibitive favorites – around 7-1 on at the sports books – to win the NL West for the thirteenth time in the past fourteen years, as well as the fifth season in a row. At the other end, the Rockies finished 2025 a whopping thirty-seven games behind the fourth-place D-backs. They will probably be better this year – if only because it’d be very difficult for them to be worse – but they ain’t making up that deficit. In the middle, though? Things get a lot more murky. What do you think?

Rank the division, honestly. Who’s real, who’s fake, and who’s lying to themselves?

It’s between the D-backs, Giants and Padres for second, third and fourth, and I don’t feel like any order of those three teams for those three spots would particularly surprise me. If you want some objective measures, FanDuel has the projected win totals as Padres 84½, Giants 81½ and Diamondbacks 79½. Fangraphs has them at Giants 82.3, Diamondbacks 80.9 and Padres 79.9. Baseball Prospectus? Giants 82.3, Padres 81.3 and Diamondbacks all the way down at 77.1. But not particularly consistent there either. So how are you feeling, as we stand at the very start of spring training.

Trace Carroll, close friend of ASU's Dillingham, takes over as Chaparral football coach

Trace Carroll, who was teammates and best friends with Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham in high school, is returning to Scottsdale Chaparral to lead the football program. Carroll played for two of the greatest high school coaches in Arizona history, Ron Estabrook and Charlie Ragle. He played at the tail end of Estabrook's career and the start of Ragle's tenure at the school. He was an offensive lineman, next to future NFL tackle Taylor Lewan, on the 2008 team that reached the state final, before losing to Scottsdale Saguaro. The quarterback of that team, Spencer Stone, is actress Emma Stone's brother. "As a proud alumni and as a former football player at Chaparral for Ron Estabrook and Charlie Ragle, I look forward to continuing the program’s great success," Carroll said. Cleveland Guardians sign Tanner Bibee to long-term contract extension

Tanner Bibee emerged a central piece to the Guardians’ future last season. He’ll now remain in Cleveland until at least 2029. The Guardians signed the right-hander to a five-year contract extension through the 2029 season that includes a club option for 2030, the club announced Saturday afternoon. Bibee was set to become a free agent after the 2028 season. This extension eats up one and potentially two years of his free agent eligibility. For Bibee, it allows him to receive his first major payday without further injury risk. For the Guardians, it allows them to retain him for an extra season or two by giving him some early financial guarantees. Last year, Bibee took over as the club’s No. 1 starter after Shane Bieber needed Tommy John surgery , Gavin Williams missed most of the season with his own injury issues and Triston McKenzie lost his command to the point of needing to be sent to Triple-A Columbus.
