The New York Giants could go in several different directions with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, one option, if it exists, should be a slam-dunk selection for general manager Joe Schoen.

That option would be Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, arguably the most exciting player in this year's class. Love was not connected to the Giants much in the early pre-draft process, but many recent mocks have him going there, such as this one from Chad Reuter of NFL.com.

"It's still possible John Harbaugh goes for a defensive back like Caleb Downs, mirroring his selections while in Baltimore. An explosive playmaker like Love might be too good to pass up, though, as defenses will need to stay in their gaps on run plays and securely tackle in the open field to prevent the former Notre Dame star from breaking away for big gains", " wrote Reuter.

However, not everyone who covers the Giants feels the same way. In the recent beat writer mock draft over at The Athletic, Dan Duggan has the Giants selecting Georgia linebacker Sonny Stiles while Love inexplicably drops to No. 14.

Giants should select Jeremiyah Love at No. 5, if he's there

Love is too good to pass up, particularly when you consider what the Giants could create with his presence. A backfield that includes Love and Cam Skattebo, led by blocking fullback Patrick Ricard, could easily be the most effective combination in football.

With Love's breakaway ability, the pounder that is Skattebo becomes even more effective. It would also help preserve his health, as he is coming off a terrible injury during his rookie season. The Giants could re-create the "Thunder and Lightning" tandem that they had in the early 2000s with Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber, only this could be even better.

Love is one of the best prospects to enter the draft at the running back position in years, and teams must take these guys when they are there. A recent example would be Bijan Robinson, who went to the Atlanta Falcons with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2023 draft. Looking back on that class, you can easily say that Robinson should have gone ahead of every pick made before him, except maybe Will Anderson.

Love could easily be off the board before the Giants go on the clock at No. 5, as he would make sense for both the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. Neither of those teams should pass on him, either, but if they do, the Giants must capitalize on that mistake.
