Potential Dolphins break-out defender made massive change in offseason
Last year, the Miami Dolphins used their first-round pick on Michigan defensive lineman Kenneth Grant, who earned All-Big Ten honors twice, All-American honors once and won a national championship with the Wolverines.
As a rookie, Grant appeared in 17 games and played 52% of the team's defensive snaps. He finished the year with 33 tackles, five quarterback hits, two sacks and a pass defensed.
Speaking with the media on Tuesday, Grant revealed that he's undergone some changes this offseason, dropping from 337 pounds to 330 pounds, and he wants to get down to around 325 pounds by training camp.
"Overall, I think it was a pretty good offseason, honestly," Grant explained. "Worked on more football-related things, also got stronger in the weight room and faster and more explosive, so that was really just my key of this offseason... I just feel like I'm more explosive. That’ll translate on the field coming out of my stance and getting into blockers and things like that. But just overall, I feel better, feel more explosive and ready to go for the season."
Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley also seemed impressed by the work that Grant has put in over the last few months.
"I think he's taking a step forward," Hafley said. "I know he's changed his body. He's faster. He looks more like the guy that I saw in his college tape with his lateral quickness, his pass rush ability, his ability to play the run, just the way he's moving. And I also think that goes back to Year 1, lack of experience, lack of reps, lack of maybe a little bit of confidence as you're out there. I just feel like right now, he's starting to believe in himself and his abilities that we know that he has and hopefully once the pads come on, we'll see that to continue"
If Grant can make a second-year leap in 2026, Miami's defense could actually keep the team in more games than expected. as they have one of the toughest schedules of any team in the league this year.
