Cowboys’ Ongoing Struggles Linked to One Jerry Jones Habit He Can’t Shake

The Dallas Cowboys sit at 1-2 after a narrow 34-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro. This start falls well behind the expectations owner Jerry Jones had for the season, putting his management of the franchise under heavy scrutiny.

The retooled defense entered the year with high hopes, but they currently rank 30th in the NFL, per Fox Sports. With Dallas seemingly facing another struggling season, Colin Cowherd accused the owner of failing to show enough respect to his coaching staff.

Dallas tied the game on a short Brandon Aubrey field goal with only seven seconds left. But Baltimore answered immediately. Lamar Jackson completed a quick 27-yard pass to set up a game-winning 56-yard field goal by Tyler Loop as time expired.

Following the disappointing Week 3 loss, Colin Cowherd argued on FS1’s The Herd that the problem sits far above the coaching staff. He called out Joens habit of not respecting successful coaches. 

“The Dallas Cowboys have had 3 successful coaches walk away from the job… That just doesn’t happen in the NFL, you know there’s dysfunction,” Cowherd said. “I’ve said this before, Jerry doesn’t respect coaching enough. He doesn’t pay enough for it.”


The three successful head coaches Cowherd is referring to are Pro Football Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, and Mike McCarthy. All three famously cut ties or moved on from Jerry Jones’ franchise despite finding significant on-field success during their respective tenures.

Jerry Jones addressed the frustrating ending Tuesday on Dallas’s 105.3 The Fan, admitting there are no easy answers for the team’s slow start.

“There is no explanation you’re satisfied with. None,” Jones said. “Let’s be sure that we all understand that. They don’t have one that they’re satisfied with.”

Cowherd did not blame Brian Schottenheimer alone for the loss. While he noted the coaching was poor, Cowherd argued the fault lies with ownership because top candidates did not want the job. Still, Schottenheimer took full responsibility for the late-game mistakes, including a poorly managed timeout and a wasted third-down pass by Dak Prescott.

“I didn’t do very good in the final 20 seconds,” Schottenheimer admitted. “I hurt our chances to win that game. I’m better than that. Those things won’t happen again.”

He noted that he later had a productive talk with Jerry Jones to address the situation. CBS Sports reports that Jones expects the coaching staff to learn from the mistakes and is not planning to make any sudden staff changes.
