Duke's top prospect makes Jon Scheyer jealous with his explosiveness

As a former point guard himself, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has a lot to offer young prospects at the position, building great relationships with his players over time, current Blue Devils point guard Caleb Foster being a great example. That said, Duke will usher in a new top point guard prospect for the 2026-27 college basketball season, Deron Rippey Jr.

Rippey Jr., a two-time Gatorade New Jersey Boys Basketball Player of the Year award winner, has turned heads all summer due to his incredible athleticism at the position. When speaking at the Durham Sports Club, Scheyer offered a similar sentiment.

"Probably the most explosive player at that position that I’ve coached," he said. "He’s 6'2", but when he jumps, he’s looking down at the rim. Makes me jealous."

While Rippey Jr. is unlikely to start right away, his development and athleticism coming off the bench further solidify how deep Scheyer's squad is ahead of the 2026-27 season.
